Jim Martin ('97)
BA, Elementary Education
Jim Martin received his BA in elementary education from Westminster, and later received his master’s degree and his doctorate degree in educational leadership and policy in 2008 from the University of Utah. He served as principal of Edison Elementary School in Salt Lake City
Prior to his administrative experience, he taught a combination of kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth grades. Jim continues to conduct research on how culturally relevant practices are enacted at the school organization and classroom levels. He also created and leads a group of Salt Lake administrators called Leaders for Equity and Social Justice.
In 1997, Jim founded Wasatch Theatre Company, a regional theatre organization that performs at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City. Combining his experience in education and love of theatre, Jim envisions Wasatch Theatre Company as a classroom where actors, directors, playwrights, and technicians can apprentice, experiment, and produce in a supportive environment that encourages individual and collaborative growth. Jim continues to play an active role at Wasatch Theatre Company, serving as the company’s artistic director.
