Helen Langan '98
Helen Langan has a long history in politics and communications, beginning her career as an intern at the White House after graduating from Westminster College in 1998 with a BS in social science. After many years working for the Clinton administration and continuing to do advance work for Michelle Obama, Helen is now the senior advisor to the Mayor for the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office. She said that her four years at Westminster helped give her the tools she needed for success, both through involvement with high-profile people and the college’s learning goals that were applied inside and outside the classroom. “I honestly think that those skills…are the things that set me apart from other people who might aspire to work in the same field I’m in,” Helen said. She also credits Westminster and her position as ASWC president for her ability to work with high-profile people with ease. Helen believes in the power of a Westminster education so much that she came back to Westminster to earn a master’s communication degree and participate in the master track program. Helen serves on the board for a nonprofit in Botswana called Stepping Stones International and for the Sundance Film Festival, and Salt Lake Film Society. She said a lot of her work allows her to bring conversations about social justice and equality issues to the forefront.
