Brian Fredrich was elected President of the Associated Students of Westminster College in spring of 2013 and has outlined an ambitious initiative for his presidency. His big goal is establishing the May Term Fund. The fund would be used to help students who couldn’t otherwise afford to participate in a May Term study abroad opportunities. Brian says, “I found them (May Term trips) to be perception-altering experiences. The merging of the classroom and the outside world facilitates genuine dialogue between students, professors, and the local population you’re living among. I wholeheartedly believe that participating in May Term Study Experiences makes for well-rounded students who is better prepared for today’s diverse workplace.”
After deliberating on how to divvy up the fund, it was decided that a flat rate of $1500 will be given to students that apply, giving them almost half the funds necessary to pay for a May Term trip. Brian has taken an extra step to ensure the success of the Fund, giving his presidential stipend to the fund to help the students he serves. “This initiative is my number one priority. During my time here, I have known far too many people who make great sacrifices to attend classes during the Fall and Spring, but can’t even begin to consider going on a May Term trip. To say I’veenjoyed my time at Westminster is a radical understatement, but my experience would be completely different if it weren’t for May Term Study Experiences.”
If there are any alumni with May Term, international, or study abroad experience, Brian would love to hear from you! He can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
