At Westminster College, Dr. Michael JD Sutton teaches numerous courses in the traditional program, including the MBA 605C Executive Development and MBA 660E Can Knowledge Be Managed? courses. He was a lead member of the curricula team that designed, developed, and delivered the innovative distance education-based BBA degree-completion program. He was also involved as an advisor to the new distance education-based MBA program and supported delivery as a coach in the capstone project sequence.
He is also an advisor/mentor for teams in the Opportunity Quest Business Plan Competition in the school's Center For Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Sutton's background is unique and distinctive. He has been a highly effective professor, mentor, and coach. In his previous 35+ years before entering the academy, he was recognized as a decisive executive, successful program and product manager, innovative consulting practice partner and senior director, transformative administrative renewal leader, and a senior management consultant.
His experience over the last four decades has proven that he has a significant positive impact on strategic organizational goals, financial sustainability, business performance, and teams under his authority. During his life-long professional development activities, he acquired extensive leadership and management experience as well as deep technical experience architecting business solutions associated with administrative renewal and new, high tech products and management consulting services.
Although he is well-known within the "knowledge and information industries," his interdisciplinary background allowed him to take on leadership roles where he combined his enthusiasm, commitment, imagination, and problem-solving capabilities with a focus onto new business opportunities or renewal of existing lines of business. His background encompasses:

Dr. Sutton's doctorate in Knowledge Management was conferred in 2007 at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His degree was the first "pure" KM degree in Canada. Other Canadian doctorates may have utilized KM tools, systems, and techniques, or investigated KM in organizational settings, but his research actually studied the defintion of KM educational programs that purported to teach KM.
Prior to returning to McGill to work on his PhD, he participated in various applied research projects outside of the academy resulting in numerous publications in academic and trade journals. This independent scholarly research culminated in the publication of his first book, Document Management for the Enterprise: Principles, Techniques, and Applications, (New York: Wiley, 1996), which has been widely adopted by corporations and universities. In 2012, Dr. Sutton was awarded the first Faculty Excellence in Scholarship Award from the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business.

Michael has reviewed numerous knowledge management, leadership, management, and research texts for academic publishers, including Jossey-Bass, SAGE, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley & Sons.
Michael was invited by AIIM to join the AIIM Executive Leadership Council, a think-tank for Information Management, which brings together top thinkers, high performance practitioners, and leaders in information management. The Executive Leadership Council will generate a series of white papers, solution guides, and other essential toolkits highlighting Social, Mobile and Cloud computing for broad distribution to the global AIIM community.
Michael has been an Editorial Board Member for journal VINE: The Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems, since 2005. He served as an Editorial Advisory Board Member for the monograph Social Knowledge: Using Social Media to Know What You Know, edited by J.P. Girard and published by IGI Global in 2011. He has also previously been an Editorial Reviewer for the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science.
Dr. Sutton has been designing skills and competency-based educational programs and teaching for most of his professional career. He has built his reputation upon taking a problem-based, student-centered approach to facilitating and motivating learners within a rich, challenging experiential learning process. Dr. Sutton's commitment to teaching excellence and quality is demonstrated in his curricula design, teaching philosophy, high academic standards, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Previous Knowledge Management Experience
Between 2004 and 2007 Dr. Sutton taught the Knowledge Management (KM) concentration within an interdisciplinary Masters of Science program at Kent State University entitled Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM). His Kent State academic teaching experience included a Teaching Excellence Award from the Provost.
He concentrated on the design, development, and deployment of five new KM project-based courses:
Foundational Principles of Knowledge Management
Organizational Knowledge Management
Information Technologies for Management
Research Methods for Knowledge Management
He also architected an e-learning based Graduate KM Certificate. He was instrumental in expanding the visibility of the IAKM program throughout the state of Ohio by meeting with and developing alliances with over 50 CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, CKOs, and numerous business leaders of local enterprises.
