Research/Teaching InterestsDr. Cline's professional interests are directly related to his personal interests. His Ph.D. dissertation dealt with two-phase (solid particles in a liquid) turbulent fluid flow, which was sparked from being a competitive swimmer and an avid sailor. He also has a strong interest in chaos and nonlinear dynamics, which has a strong tie to the study of turbulence. Stemming from his musical training, Dr. Cline also has a great interest in acoustics. And his interest in optics comes from being a struggling amateur large format photographer. Dr. Cline has recently worked with students on structural (non-pigment) color production in avian plumage, and on the physics of sound production in musical instruments. Since 1996, Dr. Cline has been actively involved in the subject of physics education, in particular student epistemologies and expectations in college physics, the effectiveness of inquiry-based instruction, and student difficulties in understanding introductory physics. |
