About

As a young man I worked as a carpenter, a fisherman, a taxi driver, a cannery worker, and for the US Forest Service in Alaska. I attended Sonoma State University in Northern California as an undergraduate. Going on to graduate study at the University of California, Irvine, I wrote my dissertation on the role of iconoclasm in 17th c. Puritan conversion narratives. In 2000, I received a Ph.D. in English Literature, and after a one-year post-doc appointment at UC Irvine, I found a home at Westminster College in 2001.

Research/Teaching Interests

My main areas of research and teaching are Renaissance and Reformation literature, Shakespeare, Generative Anthropology, and Film Studies. I am especially interested in the role of Protestant iconoclasm in Renaissance literature. I have published articles on John Bunyan, Martin Luther, Shakespeare, Rene Girard, Jacques Derrida, and literary theory. Currently I am working on a book on Shakespeare and the problem of iconoclasm.
