About

Full-time position in Mathematics Department since 1989. Courses taught include Elementary Algebra through Trigonometry, Quantitative Reasoning, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Elementary Statistics, Nature of Math, and Probability and Statistics. Special topics courses include Set Theory, Philosophy of Mathematics, Probability and Gambling, The Mathematics of Social Choice, and Combinatorics. Involved in developing and teaching Freshman Seminar designed to assist in the transition to college.
Committee work includes Curriculum Committee, Board of Trustees Finance Committee, Library Committee (Chair), Academic Appeals Committee, Faculty Affairs Committee (Chair), Faculty Senate, Chair of the Faculty, and Diversity Council.
Prior experience includes one year of teaching at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and two years at the Seychelles Polytechnic in the Seychelles Islands with Peace Corps from 1986 to 1988 teaching Cambridge Board O Level exams and City & Guilds of London Institute technical maths exams.

Research/Teaching Interests

Current interests include logic and set theory and the lower-division mathematics curriculum in particular discrete mathematics and elementary statistics education. I also am involved with students in issues of diversity and current events.
Recent papers presented include "Combining Elementary Statistics with 'fill in the discipline of your choice here': The Themed Elementary Statistics Course," "Competing Values in Philosophies of Teaching Mathematics," and "The Class Survey: A Multi-Faceted Tool for Teaching Elementary Statistics."
My masters work at the University of Colorado emphasized logic and set theory with other coursework in algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, and statistics. Master's Project: "Large Cardinals and Determinacy."
