Research/Teaching InterestsEthical Development Character Education Learning Theories Classroom Management Schools have always had the responsibility to teach kids to be smart and to be "good" citizens. Character development composes the fourth and fifth "R's" in a school setting respect and responsibility. Ethical development and character development examine the theoretical underpinnings of character and practical applications to the classroom. Attention needs to be given to this developmental domain or we risk losing future generations of young people.
OUTSIDE INTERESTS/COMMUNITY SERVICE I feel that it is an important responsibility to give back to the community in which you live. Danny Thomas, who was a comedian and entertainer, helped found St. Judes Hospital for children. He said, Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself, the true measure of success is what you do for others.
I have volunteered for the past six years with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah (BBBSU). I volunteer as a big brother. My Little Brother is a big part of my life. He is continually teachng me new skills and abilities.
I have also been involved as a volunteer with The United Way of Salt Lake City (UW). I have served on and chaired several committees for UW . I have spoken to numerous groups and corporations about the work that UW agencies perform for the community.
For the past four years I have been the Chairman of the Board for INROADS/Utah. INROADS is a national program that a group of us brought to Utah six years ago. The mission of INROADS is to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. We identify, develop, train, and place college students with local corporations and businesses.
As an outgrowth of the INROADS program I have joined the Utah Chapter of the NAACP and the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (UHCC). I have been working with members of the UHCC in establishing an Education Foundation called Somos. We provide scholarship monies to deserving Hispanic youth who are college bound or currently attending college. I chair the scholarship committee of the chamber's foundation. We gave away $250,000 in scholarships for 2009.
I have also done a significant amount of work with the Utah High School Activities Association and its national partner The National Federation of High Schools. I have served on local and national committees including Leadership Development, Citizenship, Sportsmanship, and Publication Oversight. I represented the state of Utah as the State Director of the National Federation Officials Association.
I believe that we need to serve as resources for other people. I firmly believe that as teachers we need to model appropriate behavior for our students. Albert Schweitzer said that example is not the main thing in influencing others it is the only thing. Setting an appropriate example is critical in developing effective teachers for our future.
