Hey ya'll...
I uploaded some pictures... finally. There is one from CEC and then the rest are from my Creative Arts class. Everyone had to teach a lesson during the course of the semester. One of the last lessons was team-taught by Adrianne and Ashley. They incorporated all of the different arts (music, dance, drama, and visual) and used the classic book WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE as well. (If you are not familiar with the story, run to your nearest library and check it out!) Anyway, to make a long story short, we got to "become" wild things. The pictures are quite hilarious. When I shared them with a non-education friend, she laughed and said "Yeah, it looks like Education Majors work REALL-LY hard!" She obviously failed to recognize the effort we put into our "wild things". Check out the pictures and decide for yourself!
On another note, I was able to photograph the "Making Waves" art show that Heidi put together, displaying all of the work that students had created representing what the arts meant to them/the value of the arts. I brought my roommate along (because I like dragging people along with me) and she and I were both amazed at what we saw. I knew that my colleagues were talented but I had no idea what was in store. I wish that the show was up a little longer because I would have "forced" more people to check it out. It was truly incredible. Everything was very different but it was all based around the same concept: that art is important to people. It moves. It inspires. It encourages.

I wanted to share with you a quick story...
As a little background, I am working, once again, with the after school program at Nibley. I basically had the same class that I had a year ago, they are in third grade now, and there are a few fourth graders. This year they have had several teachers and they have quite a bit of conflict among the students (personality differences).
Because I think that having a good, solid classroom community is very important, I decided to "steal" an idea from my Creative Arts professor, Heidi. She had us write "Praises" (which are basically just anonymous notes that you put in a box and read aloud at the end of class everyday... little pieces of encouragement...) I modified my "Praises" a little because I read them only on Fridays at our class meeting, rather than everyday. Yesterday I gave the students a good chunk of time to work exclusively on writing praises for each other. To my astonishment, they got really into it. Because this is the first time they have ever done anything like this before, I decided to read through their praises before reading them aloud..
There is a little boy in this class, his name is Joey, and I work with him during the day because he is in Resource. As a student with special needs, he struggles with making friends; often people think that he's a little strange, although he's a very cute boy. Sometimes he can come on a little strong, but most of the time, he has innocent intentions. One of the students in the class wrote him a praise saying "Joey, you are such a fun guy. I like how you smile and love basketball. Maybe we should play together one time. Thanks for talking to me when I was having a bad day." Today we read all of the praises aloud. I wish that I could describe the look in his eyes when he heard that in a more eloquent way. It was incredible.
I must admit that I almost started crying when I read the praises that he wrote as well. He was really excited about writing to a few people in the class that he felt had been exceptionally nice to him. They were so sweet. He wrote very simple things like "Thanks for being my friend." Simple but powerful. It sounds cheesy, I know, but it was amazing.
After the praises were over, we joined with another class for an activity. It was neat to see how all of my students, who, just yesterday were fighting, were sticking up for one another. It was really cool.
Okay, so it wasn't as short as I expected... sorry :)

Hello!
Last week of the semester! YEAH!! Classes are officially over here at Westminster and now finals have just begun.
I said goodbye to my fourth grade class last week. It was really sad. They invited me back for their county fair so I will definately check that out...
Today I am finishing my time with the resource room. My case study is finsihed, written, proof read, the whole enchalada. I am feeling pretty dang good about it.
One presentation tomorrow morning and then one test tomorrow night and that is all for me :) I can see that light at the end of the tunnel...
bye for now! comments (0)
