Sponsored by Westminster’s Center for Civic Engagement and the Social Science Club, “The Philosopher Kings,” is an award-winning 2009 film that documents the passion, wisdom and the incredible tragedies and triumphs of eight custodians working in top colleges and universities across America. The film weaves together thought-provoking stories from the lives these custodians, each of whom have lived life fully and deeply, yet who are amongst those millions of Americans who are often disrespected or invisible in our culture because of their job status. Director Patrick Shen explains, “This film shows us what incredible wisdom can be found when people, who spend a good part of their lives listening and observing, get a chance to speak their minds.” The film gives a personal and enigmatic voice to eight custodians, highlighting stories like that of as Josue Lajaunesse, a Haiti native aspiring to create change for his family and his country.
Film festivals nationwide have featured “The Philosopher Kings,” and it has received multiple nominations and awards, such as “Best Film” nomination in the prestigious Silverdocs Film Festival and the Emerging Cinematic Vision Awards in the Camden International Film Festival.
