Westminster’s Great Salt Lake Institute Invites Students to be a Scientist for a Week

Westminster’s Camp GSL is open to students (15-18 years old) and teachers

SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster’s Great Salt Lake Institute invites campers to spend a week as a scientist studying the extreme environment of Great Salt Lake (GSL). Camp GSL takes place July 15-21, and provides campers with hands-on experiences that will help answer questions like: How can brine shrimp eggs survive in outer space? Why do pelicans visit the salty waters of GSL if fish don’t live there? What’s so great about the microbes that live in the lake?

“Camp Great Salt Lake is an opportunity for high school students to live like college students for a week, spend time gaining experience in a lab and field setting, go paddle boarding, and have fun meeting new people,” said Jaimi Butler, camp coordinator. “We really want to take advantage of all the resources our area has to offer.”

This year’s activities include trips to Spiral Jetty, Natural History Museum of Utah and Tracy Aviary, to name a few. The week will culminate with a trip to Antelope Island on July 21 from 12 – 2 p.m. where students will host a public program on Bridger Bay to show off what they’ve learned.  Come check out what GSL has to offer you and learn a bit more about our local wonder!

In addition to students, the Great Salt Lake Institute is inviting high school teachers to participate as paid consultants.

The camp price is $250, which includes food, lodging, and off-site activities.  Scholarships are available. Incoming high school juniors will receive two college credits. Campers can register at: http://www.westminstercollege.edu/great_salt_lake_institute/index.cfm?parent=8713&detail=13283&content=13286.  Teachers interested in participating should call or email Jaimi Butler at (801) 832-2308 or jbutler@westminstercollege.edu.

This year’s Camp Great Salt Lake is funded by Rio Tinto.
