Westminster Named to Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service
College students completed a record high 67,000 hours of community service
SALT LAKE CITY – For the sixth straight year, Westminster has been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service for its commitment and achievement in community service.
Westminster students performed 67,000 hours of community service during the 2010–2011 academic year, a record high for the college. Projects included helping the homeless, teaching the elderly how to use computers and social media and numerous service projects focused on social issues. Students worked with refugee families, raised money for a local rape recovery center, taught math to girls in juvenile detention and participated in a variety of environmental clean-up projects.
“It is thrilling that Westminster is recognized again for its commitment to service-learning and community service,” said Julie Tille, director of Westminster’s Center for Civic Engagement. “Faculty, staff and students are dedicated to this work, and they deserve enormous credit for getting this recognition yet again.”
All of the college’s clubs and organizations are required to complete at least one service project every year, and one whole day during First-Year Student Orientation is committed to community service. Additionally, hundreds of Westminster students provide service each semester, all of which are coordinated and supported by the college’s Center for Civic Engagement.
