SALT LAKE CITY - Four Westminster College students were awarded NAACP and Utah Jazz scholarships at the 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon at the Little America Hotel on Jan. 17, 2011.

Junior Jillian Tesfazion and sophomore Alexi Johnson received the NAACP scholarship of $1,000 each. Junior Karmay Gorley and senior Joi Logan received a surprise scholarship of $1,500 each from the Utah Jazz.

The scholarships are designed to financially assist deserving college students with tuition and books. Scholarship recipients must be full-time students at an accredited Utah college, possess a 2.5 G.P.A, and when possible, be a part of an under-represented ethnic group in Utah.

“We are thrilled to have four Westminster students receive the NCAAP scholarships,” said Bridget Newell, Westminster associate provost for diversity and global learning. “Each of our recipients are not only scholars, but have shown that they can excel in areas from leadership in service learning projects to athletics. This award helps recognize their tremendous efforts.”
