Westminster Among Elite Group of Colleges to Receive National Service Award

November 13, 2006

Westminster College has become one of only 350 colleges in the United States to be named to the first-ever President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal office responsible for encouraging service and service-learning. Westminster College is one of three campuses in Utah to receive this honor.

This award comes to Westminster in recognition of the outstanding service that students, staff and faculty provide to the community. Nearly half of all students were involved in college-sponsored service activities last year, and faculty members from across the campus built service-learning into their courses. Taken together, these activities deepen student learning, increase civic engagement and improve the quality of life in many communities across the state and nation.

Over 800 Westminster Students participated in the community service activities offered through the Westminster College campus, including:

  • Helping Hands Day
  • Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break
  • Women's Basketball Team Service at the Guadalupe School
  • The School of Education's Service in Title I Schools and with Disadvantaged Students
  • The Gore School of Business' VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program
  • Hurricane Katrina Relief Projects

Westminster recently created a new Center for Civic Engagement, which has become the home for service, service-learning and civic activities. It sponsors volunteer events and campus-community conversations and supports students, staff and faculty who are interested in working with the community.
