Westminster College Breaks Ground on New Science Center

SALT LAKE CITY – After years of planning, today Westminster finally broke ground on its new Meldrum Science Center. Generous support from John and Ginger Giovale, Pete and Cathie Meldrum, the board of trustees, and Westminster science alumni have made it possible to move forward on this critical initiative.

This event highlighted the first step in the construction of the $25 million, state-of-the-art facility that will be Utah’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified science building.

The architectural firm of VCBO and Big D Construction are teaming with science faculty Paul Hooker and Tricia Shepherd in the design of a state-of-the-art facility that emphasizes inquiry-based learning, undergraduate research, interdisciplinary science, and green, energy-efficient building design. The design includes integrated lecture-labs, undergraduate research space, and innovative lab designs. The Meldrum Science Center will also house over $1 million in new science equipment, giving Westminster undergraduates the opportunity to do research on equipment usually reserved for graduate students. The facility is scheduled to open in spring 2010.
