Students Battle for Culinary Honors at Westminster's Iron Chef Competition
Whose “college” cuisine will reign supreme?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 17, 2010
SALT LAKE CITY – Under the gun and armed with George Foreman grills, microwaves and hot plates, Westminster students will griddle and sizzle against each other to find out “whose college cuisine will reign supreme” at this year’s first-ever Iron Chef competition December 1.
Although the competition’s location in no way resembles Kitchen Stadium and the participants won’t be competing against Bobby Flay or Cat Cora, the pressure will still be on as 25 students compete against each other using typical college dorm cooking appliances. For the competitors, it’s not just a race against the clock, but a battle of wits as the teams not only have to create three courses, but must incorporate a “secret college ingredient” – like Top Ramen – into their recipes.
“Students will be divided in teams of five and will be judged on three courses – an appetizer, entrée and dessert,” explained Beau Dixon, Westminster student and Iron Chef coordinator. “Each team will have 20 minutes to cook their course and will be judged on taste, plating and originality.”
Three seasoned judges –a faculty food critic, a Sodexeo chef and a “foodie” group coordinator --will decide the competition. The winning team will take home their very own George Foreman grill to cook up their own savory dishes in their dorm rooms.
So let the culinary clashes begin!
