SALT LAKE CITY – Four Westminster students are among 19 athletes named to the 2011 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Team announced Wednesday. The biennial event opens Feb. 8 and continues through the 20th in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Travis Ganong will be one of ten competing on the men’s team. Megan McJames, Laurenne Ross and Leanne Smith are three of the nine athletes named to the women’s team Wednesday.
"These are races where they don't have to focus on World Cup points or improving their start position," said women's Head Coach Alex Hoedlmoser. "It's going to be all out and we've seen that all these girls can be wicked fast."
U.S. Ski Team athletes have garnered 65 World Championship medals dating back to 1948. The event will return to America for the first time since 1999 when Vail and Beaver Creek, CO host in 2015.
Westminster currently has more than 50 students on the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team who compete in a variety of disciplines, from snowboarding to cross-country skiing. Westminster is the Official Provider of Educational Services to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team and offers a USSA Tuition Grant program to all current USSA national athletes and qualifying alumni.
