Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia program receives maximum 10-year accreditation
Westminster’s MSNA program began in 2006 and is one of only seven colleges west of the Mississippi to offer a program for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA). It is also only one of 112 colleges in the nation to offer this unique program. The COA’s 10-year accreditation will allow Westminster to continue to offer the MSNA as part of its curriculum.
“Our recent accreditation is a testament to the excellent work Westminster’s James Stimpson, Chris Torman and Sheryl Steadman have done in building this program and documenting its compliance to the COA’s standards,” said Dr. Cid Seidelman, Westminster’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. “I congratulate our staff on achieving the highest accreditation status for a CRNA program.”
In a letter from Dr. Francis Gerbasi, the executive director of the COA, he notes, “very few programs are granted accreditation with no progress report required,” and that “even fewer programs have achieved the maximum accreditation of 10 years.”
“As program faculty, we strive to provide our students with the most up-to-date education and the best possible clinical experiences,” said James Stimpson, MSNA director. “Our students graduate having personally performed nearly 1,000 anesthetics in conjunction with nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists throughout the western United States. Receiving 10-year accreditation is a great reflection on the caliber of our students, faculty, staff and clinical partners.”
Westminster’s MSNA program is a 29-month program that combines on-campus classes and off-site clinicals. The college is partnered with 22 hospitals throughout the country that provide clinical sites where students can experience a variety of cases in rural and urban settings. Students gain experience in all aspects of anesthesia practice and graduates are eligible to sit of the national certification exam.
First-year MSNA student, Phares Mondo, earned his undergraduate nursing degree at Weber State University and heard good things about Westminster’s MSNA program.
“Westminster is a great college, and it’s the only college in the state with the MSNA program,” he said. “I was accepted to other programs, but chose Westminster because I heard students really liked it here.”
One hundred percent of Westminster MSNA graduates receive full-time job offers within three months of passing their board examinations. For more information on Westminster’s MSNA program, visit http://www.westminstercollege.edu/crna/.
