Objectives
The History Program is committed to a study of the human condition in
terms of both content and methodological analysis. The program promotes
a series of objectives: an examination of historical context and content;
the reading of great writings; critical examination of these writings;
and the development of research and writing skills.
Students may elect an academic major or minor, or a teaching major or
minor. Each history student pursues a course of study leading to a Bachelor
of Arts degree that will provide for careers in business, secondary education,
and government service, as well as for preparation for advanced studies
in the history profession, law, the ministry, and library and archival
work.
Program Requirements
Enrollment in most history courses, except those designed exclusively
for majors and minors, is open to all students who are enrolled in, or
have completed, the history area Liberal Education requirement, regardless
of major field or class standing.
History majors and minors, including teaching majors and minors, are
encouraged to take History 220 (United States History) before taking any
