Descriptions
A Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate Option is available for the nationally
certified adult nurse practitioner (ANP), gerontological nurse practitioner
(GNP), or pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) who wishes to become a family
nurse practitioner (FNP).
The graduates are prepared to provide primary health care services to
clients across the life span in a variety of settings, including medically
under-served communities and nurse shortage areas, and in collaboration
with multi-disciplinary health care teams.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the admission requirements for the generic MSN students,
the certificate option applicant must present evidence of advanced health/physical
assessment, advanced pathophysiology, and advanced pharmacology in his/her
master's level Nurse Practitioner Program. Without evidence of such course
work, the certificate option student must complete advanced health/physical
assessment, advanced pathophysiology, and advanced pharmacology in Westminster's
MSN Program. Those students who have not been practicing within the past
three years will be required to take the advanced health/physical assessment
course. It is the responsibility of the certificate option student to
show evidence of previous nurse practitioner course work to the selected
national certifying agency.
Program Requirements
To fulfill the requirements of the Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate
Option, students must complete the courses outlined on the Plan of Study
for the ANP, GNP, or PNP. Students may enter the certificate option program
at the beginning of any semester.
The student will complete a minimum of 19 credits: 9 credits are in theory
and the remaining 10 are clinical practice (420 clinical clock hours).
Those students who need more course work because they do not hold a current
Utah Advanced Practice License with prescriptive privileges will need
to work with their faculty advisors to prepare individualized plans of
study.
