Mathematics and Methods for Elementary Teaching I

The two-semester sequence, EDUC 268-368, is designed to prepare early
childhood and elementary education students in appropriate mathematics
content and methods. Topics include problem solving skills, sets, whole
number operations and properties, number theory, fractions, ratios, decimals,
proportions, and percents, all with an emphasis on using manipulatives
in the classroom. Prerequisite or co-requisite: MATH 141 or higher level
or equivalent.

Secondary: Field Experience/Portfolio Development

Two field experiences in accredited public or private schools (grades
6-12) to develop clinical skills by implementing strategies in classrooms.
The first field experience should be taken concurrently with EDUC 330.
The second experience in the teaching minor should be taken concurrently
or after completion of the minor methods course. Students with a Special
Education minor will be exempt from the second field placement. Students
are required to spend 30 clock hours in their placements for each registered
credit and to attend regularly scheduled seminars that include portfolio
development. This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis.

Student teachers meet four times on campus throughout the duration of
the student teaching semester. In-depth discussion and reading enable
students to acquire and refine skills needed by all professional teachers.
Topics include parent relationships, student assessment and grades, professional
growth and collaboration with colleagues, and other issues. Visits from
practicing experts from the profession are included also. Case studies
and portfolios are presented and explored. Offered on a credit/no credit
basis.
