Westminster Director of Athletics Shay Wyatt announced the hiring of Craig Binkley as the new head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country teams at the college. Binkley will lead the Griffin cross country program into the sixth season of competition this August.

The Westminster cross country team had five men and two women named Academic All-Conference by the Frontier Conference on Thursday. The five men are the most by any team in the conference. To be eligible for the team, the student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in standing, maintain a 3.0 GPA and participate in one half of their team's games.
Cross Country 2008 Season in Review
Westminster competed in five events during the 2008 season and had full women’s teams at four of them. The best team finish for the women was a ninth place out of 13 teams at the Montana State Invitational. The only meet where the men competed with a full team was the Frontier Conference Championships. Both teams placed fifth at the conference championships.
Amanda Theobald became the first Westminster individual to qualify for the NAIA National Championships. She ran the 5K course in 19:42 to place 198th overall out of 327 total competitors. Theobald also became the first All-Frontier Conference performer for the Westminster Cross Country program this season.
The men’s team placed three on the Daktronics Scholar Athlete team in 2008. David Bonami, Chandler Jones, and Grant Rotunda were all recognized for their performance on the field and in the classroom. This is the second consecutive year that Rotunda has made the team. The women’s team had three Daktronics Scholar Athletes. Erin Butler, Helen Ho, and Theobald were named to the team by the NAIA.

Frontier Conference Commissioner Mike Walker announced the 2008 All-Conference teams today. Among the list was Amanda Theobald from Westminster. She becomes the first Griffin to be named All-Frontier Conference for cross country. Last week, Theobald became the first at Westminster to qualify for the NAIA National Championships.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released the qualifiers for the 29th Annual Women’s NAIA Cross Country National Championships. Amanda Theobald from Westminster has been announced as one of the individual qualifiers. The race will be held at Dr. Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 22, 2008 and begin at 10:30 a.m. (CST).
