Eportfolio Initiative

The college-wide eportfolio initiative began in the spring of 2009 when a group of faculty and administrators drafted a proposal which outlined a system of eportfolio assessment focused on the college wide learning goals.  The original proposal grew out of Goal 1 of the Strategic Plan as well as a recognition that student portfolios could capture learning that took place throughout a student's experience at the college.Over the past two years, Westminster College has completed a number of activities related to eportfolios and their use in supporting student learning. The final plan was approved by faculty and administration in February, 2011 and will being implementation in Fall, 2011.

2009-2010 eportfolio initiatives include the following:

  • development of a set of definitions and rubrics relative to the college wide goals
  • piloting the foliotek system in 4 INTR courses in the Fall of 2009
  • development of portfolio systems for the School of Education
  • testing the use of eportfolios as part of the faculty peer review system
  • approval of a eportfolio committee, comprised of faculty and staff, to oversee the process

2010-2011 initiatives include:

  • supporting the development of portfolio processes for School of Nursing and several programs in the School of Arts and Sciences
  • refinement of the definitions and rubrics for the college wide learning goals
  • increased use of portfolios for contract review and promotion processes by faculty
  • passing of the portfolio plan by the faculty, faculty senate, and the board of trustees
  • hosted the first Western Region conference of Association for Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence- Based Learning (AAEEBL)
  • accepted in to cohort VI of the National Coalition for Electronic Portfolio Research (NCEPR)

2011-2012 initiatives include:

  • approval of the eportfolio proposal by the faculty
  • hiring full-time eportfolio coordinator
  • continuing 3-year research project for the National Coalition for Electronic Portfolio Research (NCEPR)
  • roll out campus-wide eportfolio initiative with all freshmen, beginning FA11
  • host the second Western Region conference of Association for Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-based Learning (AAEEBL)
  • complete a revision of the College Wide Learning Goal Rubrics

2012-2013 updates and deadlines:

  • new eportfolio studio opened FA12 in the Bassis Center for Student Learning
  • the first cohort (FA11) successfully completed the competency phase of the requirement in SP12
  • the first cohort will submit the midpoint portfolio for formal evaluation by March 8, 2013
  • formal evaluation by faculty and staff will take place on June 3 and 4, 2013
  • the second cohort (FA12) has begun the competency requirement; deadline for completion is April 20, 2013
  • information sessions, design workshops, and portfolio review sessions will be scheduled throughout SP13
