Migrate an ANGEL course to Canvas





Step 1: Go to ANGEL and download the course zip file:



  1. Open ANGEL course
  2. Go to the “Manage” tab
  3. Click “Export Console”
  4. Choose “ANGEL Format”
  5. Click “Next”
  6. Click “Go Back to Export Course Content”
  7. Wait as long as needed for .zip file to be created
  8. Download course .zip file by clicking on link, then choosing to save it.
    1. NOTE: Safari auto unzips .zip files which will NOT work in Canvas. Switch to Chrome, Firefox, or IE to do this step.
  9. Notice the location of the downloaded zip file by clicking “Open Folder”

Step 2: Import Course into Canvas:


  1. Navigate to the course you want to import content into by hovering mouse over “Courses” tab at the top of the page, then click on the course title
  2. Click “Import Content” under the “Next Steps” setup guide at the bottom of the page
  3. Click on “Import content from a content package or from another system”
  4. Choose “Angel export .zip format” from the Migrate from Another System drop down menu
  5. Click the “Browse” button to choose the .zip file.
  6. Navigate to “Downloads” area and select the .zip file, then choose “open”
  7. Click on “Import course”
  8. Wait
  9. Go to “Home” of course, then click on “Import Content”
  10. Click on “Import content from a content package or from another system”
  11. Click on “View Migrations”
  12. Click on “Click here to choose the content to import”
  13. Scroll through the list of content (uncheck if there is anything you don’t want to migrate) then click on “Import Course Content”
  14. Wait until the migration has finished

Step 3: Setup course

Start on the left side navigation and go through each tab to inspect what came over and what didn’t.

  1. Announcements- ANGEL announcements do not transfer
  2. Assignments- delete unnecessary categories by hovering over the category and clicking the trash icon. Note- if you are using assignment groups with weighted categories, check the box at the top of the screen that says “Weight the final grade based on assignment groups”.
  3. Grades- check out the gradebook and make sure everything is set the way you expect
  4. People- check roster
  5. Pages- Create wiki pages if needed. This is where html pages would be if they were made in ANGEL.
  6. Files- Check files that got migrated over. Add more as needed. Organize with folders as necessary. If folders were used in ANGEL, then sometimes the folder names are converted to long numbers.
  7. Syllabus- Add syllabus as needed by clicking on “Edit Syllabus Description” > “Files” tab on right side of page > find the syllabus file from ANGEL or upload the file by clicking the “upload a new file” link. If you upload a new file, be sure to click the “Upload” button after browsing for the file.
  8. Outcomes- Check it out, usually nothing new is here
  9. Quizzes- Check out quizzes if they came from ANGEL
  10. Modules- Check to see what got put in the modules. Rearrange and rename as needed.
  11. Conferences- Nothing will come from ANGEL for this
  12. Collaborations- Nothing will come over from ANGEL for this
  13. Settings- Go to the Navigation tab and hide the items that will not be used by dragging them to the bottom of the page.
