How to Get a Library Card:

Eligibility Requirements

circulation deskStudents, faculty, and staff use their Westminster College ID as their library card. Westminster College ID cards are issued at the Health, Wellness, & Athletic Center during operating hours. Once you have obtained your Westminster College ID Card, you need to bring your card to the library Circulation Desk to register as a patron. Every patron must present a valid Westminster College ID card for any library transaction. Each academic year, all library patrons are required to have a current validation sticker for their ID. Validation stickers can be obtained from the Health, Wellnes, & Athletic Center. A validated Westminster College ID card permits one to check out materials at other academic libraries in Utah.

Borrowing Library Materials:

Main collection material circulates for 28 days. You may renew your items twice, once by phone, providing another user has not requested the item. No renewals will be done over the phone for overdue items that have exceeded the grace period of seven days. All library material including magazines, reserve books, and cassette tapes must be returned into the book return at the circulation desk. The library staff is not responsible for items left on the counter. An outdoor book return next to the main entry is always open when the library is closed.

Loan Period:

The loan period depends on the specific item being checked out and the status of the borrower. Circulation time for the main book collection:

  • Student – 28 days
  • Faculty and staff – 90 days
  • Alumni – 28 days
  • Community Borrowers – 28 days

Online Book Renewal:

Students, Faculty and Staff may renew items online through the Giovale Library Catalog. You will need your library barcode (as printed on your student/faculty/staff ID) and a pin number. Your default pin number is the last four digits of the phone number you have given to the library. Once you have logged in, you have the option of changing your pin in your account profile. Each item may only be renewed once online. If you need to renew them again, please call (801) 832-2250 or bring the items to the Giovale Library Circulation Desk.

If you cannot log in or experience any other problems with the catalog, please contact the library circulation at the number above or Jennifer Foy at (801) 832-2267.

Overdue/Lost Library Materials:

When library materials are overdue, you will be notified by mail in the form of "courtesy reminders." If you receive a "final notice" for unreturned material, a hold will be placed on your grades and transcripts at the Registrar's Office. Failure to receive overdue notices does not relieve the borrower in any way of his/her obligation to return the item on the due date. A hold will also be placed on your records for fines totaling more than $10.00.

Fines for overdue library materials are as follows:

a. Reserves and other limited check-out material:

  • 2-HOUR ITEMS 1-hour grace period all subsequent hours $1.00/hr.
  • 2-DAY ITEMS 1-day grace period all subsequent days $1.00/day
  • MAXIMUM FINE $10.00/item

b. 28-day material:

  • 7-day grace period
  • 8th day $2.00
  • 9-40 days $0.25/day
  • MAXIMUM FINE $10.00/item

When library materials are lost, the replacement cost of the materials plus a $6.00 processing fee per item is assessed to cover the cost of reordering and processing the material.

Hold Requests:

Students, faculty, and staff may place holds on library items through the Giovale Library Catalog. You will need to know your library barcode (as printed on your student/faculty/staff ID) and your pin number. The default pin number is the last four digits of the phone number you have given to the library. When you have found the item you need in the catalog, click on "Request Item", log in to your account, and follow prompts on the screen.

Interlibrary Loans:

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the method by which this library can obtain books or journal articles for you from another library. Click here for more information on ILL.

Reserves:

Materials on Reserve circulate for 2-hour, overnight or for 2-day periods (depending on the size of the class using the item).

Patrons may access books and copies of articles by requesting them at the Circulation Desk.

Faculty may place personal or library copies of material on reserve at the Library by completing the following steps:

  • Download and complete a Reserve Request Form. (Forms are also available in the Library.)
  • Fill out, sign, and date the form.
  • Send by inter-office mail or bring the completed form and a copy of the material to the Circulation Desk as far in advance as possible.  (Due to time and staff limitations, we cannot guarantee your reserve materials will be immediately available for students unless you have submitted your Reserve Requests well before the first day of classes.)

At the end of the semester, items on reserve will be automatically be withdrawn and returned to the faculty member.

For more information about library hours, reserves, renewals, etc., please check with a library staff member or call (801) 832-2250.
