Internet Use Policy for the Giovale Library Computer Workstations

Introduction

computer

The Giovale Library provides access to Internet resources as a service to students, faculty, and staff of Westminster College.

The Giovale Library does not restrict access to materials nor protect users from offensive or incorrect information available on the Internet. Furthermore, using these resources to intimidate, harass, display hostility toward others, or for other illegal purposes is expressly prohibited.

Guidelines for Appropriate Use:

  1. Use of the computer workstations is limited to educational purposes such as acquiring information to fulfill class assignments, enhancing career development, and the gathering of knowledge in general.

  2. The computer workstations in the Giovale Library may not be used to play computer games or to participate in chat rooms. All of the computer workstations are set up with access to library resources, software for writing term papers, and access to personal accounts such as e-mail.

  3. The Giovale Library endorses the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement of the American Library Association. Library staff members will not act as censors of material accessed via the Internet; however, the library does reserve the right to monitor terminals to ensure that they are being used for their intended educational purposes.

  4. Certain databases can only be accessed from specific computer workstations in the library reference area. If someone else is waiting to use a resource only available on a specific computer workstation a library staff member may ask a user to move their session to a different workstation. The staff member on duty will be responsible for making the decision regarding demand and the length of time the workstation may be used.

  5. The settings on computer workstations may not be changed. This includes adding or deleting software, changing the wallpaper or preferences, or downloading any programs except to a personal floppy disk.

  6. Users are expected to adhere to license agreements and copyright laws. When using networks outside of Westminster users are expected to abide by the acceptable use policies of those systems.

  7. The library has no responsibility for any lost or damaged data on disks, viruses transmitted to disks, or viruses transmitted to other computers. Students must save files to their network drive, or their own disks, and not attempt to save files to the computer workstations.

  8. Parents or guardians are responsible for the information selected and accessed by their children via the Internet. Children should not be left unattended at computer workstations. Unattended children will be asked to leave.

Please refer to Westminster's Responsible Use of Technology Statement for further information and policies regarding the use of Westminster's computer network.
