Citations and Bibliographies: Uses

Bibliographies on particular subjects are also published as books, journal articles, and web sites.

When you're starting a research project, you can try adding the word "bibliography" to the searches that you are performing in the Library's databases or on the Web.

Getting a published bibliography on your subject is a good way to quickly find a lot of good resources related to your topic, and can supplement your own searches of library resources or the Internet.

As you move forward in your career, you may very well find yourself writing and publishing research related to your profession. Including a bibliography will help researchers who come after you follow in your tracks.

Well-done bibliographies also help build your credibility. When you properly cite all the sources you used and include a complete bibliography, it helps signal to your audience that you know what you're talking about. Your opinions carry weight. You have authority as an author.
