  • You copy words, sentences, ideas, and media from the web without giving credit
  • You download research papers or order custom written research papers and present these as your own

Many students believe that items they find on the web are "free for the taking." This is not the case! Every web page has "creators" of design and content. Acknowledge their intellectual work by citing every item you include in your research paper/projects!

Paper Mills tempt you to download research papers for a fee. This is PURE cyber-plagiarism.

Downloading and sharing copyrighted files, such as books, software, movies, games, and music without the consent of the copyright owner is a serious issue. This may be done by using file sharing programs like Kazaa, or by making the hard drive of a computer available to others. These actions are a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and subject to large fines.

Four students have been sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and have paid settlements ranging from $12,000 to $17,500. Maximum civil penalties have been defined as $150,000 per song.

What you CAN do:

  • You can rip music that you have legally purchased to MP3s so that you have them in a digital format.
  • You can burn your own "mix" CD from your own CD collection, as long as you keep that mix CD in your possession.
