First Step: PREPARE

Find background information and definitions of key terms in general or subject-specific reference resources:

Suggested resources:

  • General encyclopedias cover most subjects and therefore, can give you a good introduction to your topic.
(example: World Book; Encyclopaedia Britannica Online)

  • Subject-specific encyclopedias contain detailed articles written by experts in the fields. Look at the bibliographies at the end of the articles to locate further information.

(example: for a topic related to psychology use the Encylopedia of Psychology)
  • CQ Researcher - This easy-to-use online resource gives you an excellent overview of a topic.

Create a list of all Keywords representing the main concepts of your topic. Look for synonyms.

For further information/clarification of your topic, talk to your instructor, your librarian, or an expert on your subject.
