Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology James H. Cone has written or edited 11 books, published more than 150 articles, and guest lectured at more than 1,000 colleges, universities, divinity schools, and community organizations throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Cone is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. His research and teaching are in Christian theology, with special attention to black theology and the theologies of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as twentieth-century European-American theologies.
Cone received his B.D. from Garrett Theological Seminary in 1961; the M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1963 and 1965, respectively; an honorary LL.D. from Edward Waters College; and several honorary L.H.D.s from such notable institutions as Philander Smith College (1981), Denison University (1986), and Payne Theological Seminary (1987). His awards include American Black Achievement Award in the category of Religion given by Ebony Magazine of Johnson Publications (1992); the Theological Scholarship & Research Award from the association of Theological Schools (1994); and the Fund for Theological Education Award, American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature, for contributions to theological education scholarship (1999).
