MAT Secondary Education Program (Grades 6-12)

Recommended Plan of Study for Secondary Education Program (MATSED)

Full-time students may begin the MAT program in either the summer or fall semesters. They complete the program in three semesters (summer-fall-spring or fall-spring-fall).

FIRST TERM - summer or fall
MAT 600* - Culture, Family and Community (3)
MAT 601 - Technology and Teaching (1)
MAT 602* - Introduction to Education (3)
MAT 604 - Learning Theory (2)
MAT 605 - Diversity and Learning (3)
MAT 611*- Curriculum Design and Managment (3)

*At least these three courses must be taken in the first term by part-time students.

SECOND TERM - fall or spring
MAT 610 - Manging the Inclusive Classroom (3)
MAT 612 - Secondary Methods Seminar (2)
MAT 613 - Secondary Methods and Assessment (4)
MAT 614 - Reading, Language, and Literacy (3)
MAT 616-625 - Subject Methods Course (3)

Students will complete 30 hours of observation and teaching in schools arranged by Westminster's School of Education for each of two methods courses (60 hours total).

THIRD TERM - spring or 2nd fall
MAT 606 - Travel Seminar (2)
MAT 607 - Teaching and Research Seminar (1)
MAT 615 - Secondary Student Teaching (6)

Part-time students develop a schedule in consultation with an advisor to take additional semesters to complete the program.
