May Term FAQs

  • What exactly is May Term?
It is a month long term during May. Students take specialized classes and have the opportunity to go on trips.
  • How many credits do I take during May Term?
All classes are either 2 or 4 credits. It's recommended that you only take four credits. It may not sound like a lot, but crammed into 4 weeks you would be surprised at how much work you do.
  • What kind of classes are offered?
All of the classes are elective type, but many can fulfill upper division elective requirements. Classes are offered from all majors, and they are typically more specific and less traditional than the normal school year. Examples include History of Rock and Roll, Victorian Murders, The Mathematics of Knots, and Chemistry and Biology of Brewing.
  • How much does May Term cost?
Actually, unless you go on an May Term Study Experience that includes travel (domestic or international) it doesn't cost you anything. Full time students earn 2 free credits each during the Fall and Spring semesters, which gives you 4 credits for May Term. Anything above that is normal tuition rates.
  • How much do the travelling May Term Study Experiences cost, and what does the school cover?
The college doesn't cover any of the travel expenses besides the tuition. Travel expenses vary depending upon destination and the length of stay. Trips within the US typically cost $400-600, while trips to other countries cost anywhere from just over $2,000 to $5,000. This money goes toward plane tickets, transportation, lodging, and actvities on the trip(such as museums, etc.). As a school group, the teachers in charge get pretty good discounts. What the students are responsible to pay for while traveling is bit different for each trip.
  • Who puts together the study experiences and decides where to go?
The faculty put study experiences together, although the school has to approve. Since the professors plan the travel, a lot depends on them. You never know what will be offered each year.
  • Where do they usually go on the trips?
It changes every year, but you can count on at least a few stateside trips and several all over Europe. The education department goes to Austraila on a fairly regular basis, and the English department is always going somewhere.
  • Do I have to be in that major to take a class?
NO. If you are a math major who always loved Jane Austen novels, then take the class! May Term is the time to explore everything that might interest you, even if it's not in your normal routine.
  • Do I have to take a May Term class?
You don't have to, but May term is the funnest time of the year; you get to take a class on something that interests you, instead of what is required. Most students think of it as a reward for getting through one more year of school.
