Gore School of Business Master Track Seminar

2009-2010

The Gore School of Business Master Track Seminar provides MBA students and MBA alumni the opportunity to explore practical business issues and personal career issues, receive executive-level coaching from a personal coach and individual corporate mentoring support from area business leaders.  This program began in the 2000–2001 academic year to meet the combined mentorship and executive development needs of our MBA students. Selection is limited to 36 participants this year (3 groups).   Two of the groups will address general career and business issues.  The third group is for entrepreneurs who are in the process of starting and building their own business (E Track).  Since its inception, the Master Track program has received high praise from each of the participants and their corporate mentors.

In general, the program consists of three mandatory components:

  • One-on-one executive coaching sessions (1 meeting each month)
  • Corporate mentoring (1 meeting each month)
  • Peer-to-peer forums (9:30–3:30 on designated Saturdays each month from September to May)

There are two additional optional events:

  • Mid-term service project (January)
  • Final "graduation" dinner (May)

Each participant is asked to keep the details of every conversation absolutely confidential. There is no grade given for this program and 100% participation in the program components is required.

Master Track Defined:

Master Track is a 9 month-long program with 12 participants in each group, which meets once per month during the school year from September through May. It is co-led by two experienced businesspeople with entrepreneurial and group facilitation experience. The charge for this non-credit seminar is $900. The program offers:

One-on-One Executive Coaching; each participant and one of the Seminar Leaders meet each month to discuss business and personal issues as defined by the participant.

Corporate Mentoring; corporate mentors and participants are paired up at the beginning of each Master Track year through a process of interviewing; that pair then meets each month to discuss the goals and objectives of the Master Track participant.

Peer-to-Peer Forum; the whole Master Track class meets once a month (on a designated Saturday) to meet with one of the Corporate Executives in the morning and to discuss their personal issues in the afternoon; both are conducted in a highly confidential, small group setting.

A typical Peer-to-Peer Forum day includes:

  • 9:30–11:30 - Outside speaker, with emphasis on successful Salt Lake area business owners/leaders who will share their “real life” career experiences
  • 11:30–1:00 - Lunch, participant updates, and morning debrief
  • 1:00–1:30 - Energizer focused on the "Poem-to-Live-By"
  • 1:30–3:30 - Executive session: participants use the group as their "personal board of directors" to address issues important to them. This session is limited to participants and the seminar co-leaders only, and all discussions are held in confidence.
