The Master of Strategic Communication (MSC) degree is a five-semester graduate degree program designed to build and refine leaders in the communications industry.
Opportunities for communication experts are expanding. In fact, the next generation of business leaders will be the consummate communicators. They will be select individuals who possess a thorough understanding of the creative process along with a keen strategic sense. They will have the ability to develop messaging across a variety of communication platforms, direct research of audiences and organizations, manage and inspire creative resources, interface with clients at all levels, and orchestrate all these functions to maximize effectiveness. The Westminster College MSC program is specifically designed to help you build these skills.
As an MSC student, you will be expected to establish expertise in the areas of:
- Leading teams, managing projects, and building your expertise as a successful leader
- Analyzing real-world problems and developing creative solutions
- Using strategic communications tools and techniques
- Developing and leading marketing and communication strategies
- Preparing and presenting comprehensive proposals to real clients
- Developing strategic writing skills for multiple audiences, in multiple formats

You’ll work project-by-project in a sequential format, meaning each new project will require application of techniques you’ve mastered in the previous project. Each semester, you’ll have a new project sequence to complete. Projects are hands-on and based on real-world scenarios and clients. Projects combine individual work and team work.
As you complete each project sequence, you’ll grow your knowledge base, your applied skills, and your portfolio. In the fifth semester, you’ll work with your faculty mentor to develop a final project intended to culminate your learning and serve as a demonstrative element in your leadership portfolio.
FIVE WEEKEND WORKSHOPS
You’ll begin each project sequence by attending a two-day workshop on campus where you’ll work directly with your faculty mentor to understand the context and framework of projects for that semester. You’ll meet and network with other industry professionals, and spend time exploring cases, participating in exercises, and building the fundamental skills that will establish the foundation for your development as one who leads by example.
At any point in your project work, you can consult with your faculty mentor. Your faculty mentor will help you develop an individualized learning strategy and give you the amount of support and guidance you need along the way. At the completion of each project, your faculty mentor will apply a clear and consistent set of specific competencies to help you understand how to make your work even better.
The goal of the MSC program is NOT about how many hours you sit in a classroom. This is a graduate-level program for top-tier communication professionals. A superior level of experience, self-discipline, and ambition is expected. We will combine those assets with expert, devoted faculty and a cutting-edge, on-demand knowledge database available to you 24/7, no matter where you are in the world. The program’s project-based format allows you to learn-by-doing and gain a deeper understanding by putting theory into practice.
An important aspect of leading in the communications industry is networking. You’ll meet and hear from leaders in the industry at residencies and explore opportunities for memberships in professional organizations.
