Music Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone perform in the music ensembles?

The Griffin Chorus, Jazz Combo, and Chamber Orchestra are open to all Westminster students, faculty, and staff. All students are eligible for the Chamber Singers.

If I'm not pursuing a music degree, can I still take music courses for credit?

Westminster Music ProgramYes. Certain music courses may be used to fulfill two liberal education distribution requirements, and they may also be taken for elective credit.

Can I take private lessons? How do I enroll?

Private lessons are available to all Westminster students, faculty, and staff. Extra music department paperwork is required prior to registration. Contact Dr. Karlyn Bond. 

What courses do you offer?

Westminster offers a wide variety of music courses that will develop your aural skills, knowledge of music theory, and music performance capabilities. In addition to these, you will study the history of Western music and have numerous opportunities to engage in elective courses on topics ranging from the Renaissance to Broadway. What are the audition requirements for a music minor?

Westminster Music Program

All prospective music minors must audition for the Director of Music as follows:

  • Play or sing two contrasting classical or jazz works from memory on your major instrument/voice.
  • Provide your own accompanist or bring a recording of the accompaniment.
  • Present a complete and formal musical resume, with photo, detailing all solo and ensemble training, performing experience, and musical awards through high school.

When can I audition?

What does it cost for concert attire?

Choir uniforms - dress or tuxedo - cost approximately $100 per person. There is no uniform cost for the instrumental ensembles.

Small classes.  Big deal!  With an average class size of 17, you are a big deal to your professors.
