Piano audition suggested repertoire

If you are auditioning on piano, please refer to the following list for repertoire appropriate for your audition. This list applies to auditionees on classical piano and does not apply to jazz piano auditionees. These are recommended pieces for auditions and not required pieces. Audition pieces not on this list should be of comparable difficulty to those listed here. Remember to prepare two contrasting pieces (or single movements from larger works) for your audition. The pieces should be memorized.

  • Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Italian Concerto, English Suites, Partitas, French Suites
  • Bartók: Sonata
  • Beethoven: Sonatas
  • Brahms: Op. 116 to 119 pieces or rhapsodies
  • Chopin: Études, nocturnes, polonaises, ballades, sonatas, or impromptus
  • Debussy: Études, Suite bergamasque, Pour le piano, Estampes, Images, préludes
  • Haydn: Sonatas
  • Ligeti: Études
  • Liszt: Études, Années de pèlerinage, consolations, Hungarian rhapsodies
  • Mendelssohn: Songs without words
  • Mozart: Sonatas
  • Prokofiev: Sonatas, Visions fugitives
  • Schubert: Sonatas, impromptus, or moments musicaux
  • Scriabin: Études, sonatas
