Music Learning Goals
Students will:
- Develop basic aural skills such as sight-singing; interval identification by sound alone; and fluency in rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation.
- Develop basic knowledge of music theory, including an understanding—within the tonal system—of basic harmony, the rules of voice leaning and 4-part writing, and species counterpoint.
- Take a critical look at the evolution of Western music and the many factors contributing to stylistic change--necessarily involving the integration of art and culture.
- Face creative challenges in musical interpretation and performance while studying an instrument or voice privately, and when participating in performing ensembles.
- In general, receive a well-rounded education in music and sufficient training to allow them to spend the rest of their lives being not just connoisseurs, but also, active, accomplished and enthusiastic musicians.
