SALT LAKE CITY – G.I. Jobs has recently announced that Westminster College will be featured in the 2010 list of Military Friendly Schools to be released today. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
“We are very pleased to be recognized for our efforts with supporting our nation’s veterans,” said Joel Bauman, vice president of Westminster’s Enrollment Services. “We believe military students bring a high degree of maturity, life experiences, diversity, leadership and worldliness to the classroom providing our students and faculty the benefit of unique perspectives.”
Schools on the Military Friendly Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more. The list was compiled through extensive research starting last May during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) consisting of educators and administrators throughout the higher education community.
Westminster has had a dedicated veterans coordinator for more than two decades and has recently signed on to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, a provision to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Under the new program, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Westminster will cover the total cost of tuition and fees for eligible veterans who meet admissions standards of the college.
Utah Valley University, Weber State University and Utah State University are also included on this year’s list. The 2010 Military-Friendly School List can be found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/mfspr
