Westminster’s Lindsy Brickell Awarded Prestigious ASM Fellowship
Fellowship awarded to students pursuing graduate careers in microbiology

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has selected Lindsy Brickell from Westminster College as a 2009 award recipient of the ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship.
This fellowship is aimed at highly competitive students who wish to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.) in microbiology. Fellows have the opportunity to conduct full time summer research at their institution with an ASM mentor and present their research results at the 2010 ASM General Meeting in San Diego, CA if their abstract is accepted.
Each fellow receives up to a $4,000 stipend, a two-year ASM student membership and reimbursement for travel expenses to the 2010 ASM General Meeting.
This year, 69 applications were received and 33 fellowships were awarded. Of the 33 awardees, 12 students were from doctoral/research universities - extensive institutions, four students were from doctoral/research universities - intensive institutions, one student was from a specialized institution - schools of engineering and technology, eight student were from a master’s college and universities, and eight students were from baccalaureate colleges.
Westminster’s Dr. Bonnie Baxter, the director of the Great Salt Lake Institute and associate professor of biology, is Brickell’s mentor. The title of her research project is “Carotenoids and DNA Damage in a Great Salt Lake Halophilic Archea.”
