Westminster’s Ethics Bowl Team Outwits Utah Teams to Take Home the Regional Championship

The college’s A Team will progress to the national championship in 2010

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College Ethics Bowl Team won the Wasatch regional qualifying competition defeating Weber State University in the final match at Utah Valley University on November 14. Winning in the finals 153 to 149, Westminster’s A Team will progress to the national competition in February 2010.

“Westminster and Weber State have gone head-to-head in the regional finals five times out of the past five years,” said Dr. Michael Popich, Westminster’s team coach. “This is an impressive result for both teams.”

The Westminster A Team ultimately beat out teams from the University of Utah, Utah Valley University and Weber State. Westminster’s B Team also did well by defeating Weber State and the University of Utah’s B Teams, but lost in a close match to the Utah Valley University A Team.

“I am very proud of our students and pleased for their success, which is due in large part to their own hard work,” said Popich. “Our students were very well prepared and represented Westminster well by demonstrating in practice the learning goals and values we cherish.”

Weber’s A Team will also progress to the nationals, which will consist of the top 32 teams in the country. In the fall of 2009, 10 regional ethics bowls took place throughout the United States. The top scoring teams in those bowls will compete at the national championship of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in Cincinnati, Ohio at the nineteenth Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) in 2010.

The Westminster College Ethics Bowl A Team includes: Hans Romo, Cooper Henderson (Honors student), Tessie Graham (Honors student), Camber Stoddard (Honors student) and Tyler Sutton (Honors student). Westminster’s B Team includes: Kerrie Thometz, Dailey Haren, Robin Hill (Honors student), Mauricio Aguilera and O'Ryan Moore.
