Organization Seeks to Generate Interest in Women in Aviation


From Amelia Earhart, to Bobbi Trout, to Dora Strother, the Ninety-Nines has a rich and distinguished membership list of amazing women aviators. Since 1929, the Ninety-Nines has provided opportunities for female fliers to gather, share stories and provide mentorship to each other.

Westminster is organizing a local chapter of the Ninety-Nines, with a kickoff meeting Oct. 16, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Gore Auditorium in the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business. The meeting will include a film screening of Wings of their Own, and a chance to talk to other female pilots.

“With women representing less than 7% of all licensed pilots, the Ninety-Nines hopes to promote women in aviation,” said Gail Klofstad, Westminster aviation resource manager and Ninety-Nines coordinator. “Westminster’s aviation program currently is comprised of 12% women, but it’s been found that women pilots often appreciate additional mentoring and support. We wanted to create an organization that attracts and retains quality female pilots.”

The Ninety-Nines has a rich history of women combat pilots, astronauts, commercial pilots and other aviators. All women pilots and supporters are welcome to come out and attend the event.
