Westminster Breaks Ground On New Meldrum Science Center

Ceremony to be held May 30, 2008 at 2 p.m.

SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster College is pleased to announce the groundbreaking ceremony for the Meldrum Science Center will be held on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 2 p.m. between Foster and Converse Halls.

Generous support from John and Ginger Giovale, Pete and Cathie Meldrum, the board of trustees and Westminster science alumni have made it possible to move forward on this critical initiative.

The $25-million facility, scheduled to open in spring 2010, will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified and house 14 open and flexible classroom/laboratories and five dedicated undergraduate research laboratories.

Designed by VCBO Architects and to be built by Big D Construction, the 60,000 sq. ft., four-story Meldrum Science Center will be located between Converse and Foster Halls. As a LEED-certified facility, it is designed, and will be constructed, with sustainability in mind—storm water will be collected and used to flush toilets, daylight will be used to the greatest extent possible, and local building materials will be used, as practical, among many other energy and resource saving factors. Ultimately, the design, construction and building itself will serve as an important teaching tool for students as well as the community.
