September 2-3 - Global Health Day panel and lecture with Kim LeBel, a nurse who has served in Afghanistan. On September 2 LeBel will give a presentation on nursing in conflict settings. At 4:30pm on September 3 in Gore Auditorium, LeBel will lecture on the relationship between her work and the gender, health, and political issues raised in 3 Cups of Tea. September 5-7 - Labor Day Weekend Trip to King’s Peak—Join a group of students who will climb King’s Peak, the highest point in Utah. For more information contact Liz Rogers: erogers@westminstercollege.edu
September 22 - Wasatch Front Forum "Save our Snow" - Student Leadership and Environmental Issues. Located in the Gore Auditiorium at 7:30pm, the Wasatch Front Forum series is designed to bring together a multitude of voices surrounding controversial environmental issues facing our community. Join student leaders from various college campuses across the Salt Lake Valley to discuss the topic of environmental leadership. How do these student leaders plan on championing environmental issues at their academic institutions? This panel is moderated and broadcast by KRCL radio.
COMMON GROUND WEEK: THE MOUNTAINS September 27-October 3
September 27 - Ken Burns' documentary on the National Parks will be aired at Sugar House Park. A group of students, faculty and staff will meet in front of Converse Hall at 6:15pm to walk over to the viewing. Please contact Jeff McCarthy with any questions at 801.832.2374.
September 28 - View Part II of the Kens Burns' documentary on the National Parks in the Gore Auditorium. We will meet at 6:30pm for a brief discussion before the 7pm showing.
Septmeber 29 - The Spirit of High Places - Lecture and photography exhibit by Jonathan Duncan. 7:30pm in the J. Lees Courage Theatre in Jewett. Over the past decade Duncan has traveled across Asia, living in and photographing mountain cultures. This lecture opens an exhibit of Duncan’s photographs from the mountains of Asia. The exhibit will remain up in Richer Alcove, Jewett Center during October. For more information contact Duncan at jduncan@westminstercollege.edu

October 27 - Three Cups of Tea author Greg Mortensen speaks at BYU Forum - We'll be leading a road trip to BYU to listen to Mortensen's public lecture, held at 11am at the Marriott Center. The lecture will be followed by a conversation between Westminster and BYU students on social change. More information is available from Gary Daynes - daynes@westminstercollege.edu
November 2 - Dr. Geoffrey Tabin, 7:30pm, Gore Auditorium Dr. Tabin, a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah, describes the creation of the Himalayan Cataract Project, an effort to eradicate preventable blindness in the Himalaya.
November 17 - Wasatch Front Forum "Save our Snow" - Master Plan for the Wasatch Canyons. Located in the Gore Auditiorium at 7:30pm, the Wasatch Front Forum series is designed to bring together a multitude of voices surrounding controversial environmental issues facing our community. Learn how the policies which will form the basis of a revision of the 1989 Salt Lake County Wasatch Canyons Master Plan for City Creek, Emigration, Red Butte, Parley’s, Millcreek, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood Canyons will affect the environmental integrity of the Canyons. The Master Plan is the basis for the County’s land use planning policies and ordinances. Come and learn how this changing policy will affect your community. This panel is moderated and broadcast by KRCL radio.
January 2010 - Common Ground Writing/Art Contest - The 3rd annual creativity contest begins this month with a focus on the mountains. For the first time the contest will include a category for visual arts. Contact Chris LeCluyse for more information at clecluyse@westminstercollege.edu .
January 26 - Lessons on Social Entrepreneurship from Three Cups of Tea - Don Gomes, Executive Director of the Utah Nonprofits Association and Management professor Steve Hurlbut lead a discussion on the perils and pleasures of starting a nonprofit. Located in the Gore Auditiorium at 7:30pm, the Wasatch Front Forum series is designed to bring together a multitude of voices surrounding controversial environmental issues facing our community. How will Global Warming and Climate Change be a nuisance along the Wasatch Front in the years to come? What change is facing our ski communities with warmer climate and rapid snowmelt? Learn how all of these critical changes will be issues and challenges facing Utah in the near future. This panel is moderated and broadcast by KRCL radio.
February 2010 - Celebrate the Winter Olympics at the Alumni House - Join the staff of the Alumni House in watching and celebrating the Olympic achievements of Westminster students. Contact Lynn Heinlein at lheinlein@westminstercollege.edu . Date and time TBA.
