Utah schools honored for community service

Three Utah colleges and universities this year were recognized "with distinction" for their support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) named Westminster College, Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University to its 2011 honor roll.

Students at Westminster, a private liberal arts school in Salt Lake City, performed 45,000 hours of community service last year on projects that included teaching the elderly how to blog, assisting the homeless, and teaching math to kids, according to Julie Tille, Westminster's Center for Civic Engagement director.

"Westminster's civic engagement efforts stretch from students' first day on campus to well past graduation," she said in a prepared statement. "We introduce students to the full range of civic engagement opportunities and build on each other, helping students grow into lives fully committed to learning and to engage in the challenges of community life. Westminster is dedicated to the service and service-learning work this honor reflects."

Also included in the 641 schools making the CNCS honor roll were the University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, Southern Utah University and Weber State University.
