Speaker to address innovation, economy and Asia's influence
The role of American innovation in keeping the U.S. a global economic power, overcoming the rising influence of India and China, will be the subject of a free Sept. 13 lecture at Westminster College of Salt Lake City. Adam Segal, a senior fellow for counterterrorism and national security studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, will speak on "Advantage: How American Innovation Can Overcome the Asian Challenge" at 7 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory. The lecture is part of the college's 2011-12 Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series, presented with the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, a nonprofit that promotes mutual understanding and respect between the people of Utah and other nations. American Express and Wells Fargo also sponsor the series. Segal, who was an arms control analyst studying China for the Union of Concerned Scientists, contends that innovation is crucial to U.S. efforts to maintain its technological lead over emerging counties such as India and China. To do that, he argues, the country must encourage institutions that "move ideas from the lab to the marketplace." Author of Digital Dragon: High Technology Enterprises in China, Segal also writes for the blog Asia Unbound.
