Sugar House summer camps keep residents busy
With school out, the task of keeping children busy during the summer gets a little tougher for parents.
Westminster College and the Fairmont Aquatics Center are both offering several camps and classes for children and adults to keep them busy and help them have fun this summer.
Westminster’s athletic teams are hosting several events for children of all skill levels. The camps are designed to help young athletes learn the necessary skills to compete in a fun and stress-free environment.
“Summer athletic camps are a great way for Westminster coaches and athletes to get out into the community,” said Westminster Athletic Director Shay Wyatt. “It’s also an opportunity not only for younger athletes to learn, but for coaches to evaluate potential recruits.”
The Westminster men’s basketball team started its camps in June and they will run through July 26. There are several different camps held at various times during the summer. The women’s team will also hold a basketball camp, June 25-28.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse is hosting camps, as well. The men’s team will be offering camps throughout the summer, through July 27. This is the third consecutive year the women’s team has hosted a camp. This year it will be held July 9-12.
Women’s soccer will host its camp July 25-28. The Westminster women’s volleyball team started its camp on June 15 and will continue on select weeks through July 19.
The Fairmont Aquatics Center started its summer hours on June 11 and is offering open plunge and several other classes for adults and children. The pool has open plunge hours all summer in addition to swimming lessons. The leisure pool went through a renovation earlier in June and reopened to the public on June 9.
Robert Bridge is the manager at Fairmont and said it’s important to offer a variety of things for Sugar House residents to do during the summer.
“What’s great about our facility is there’s something for everyone. Anyone can come and do most of the programs, regardless of the age,” he said. “There’s no better way to cool down and beat the heat than by swimming at our indoor pool.”
In addition to swim lessons and open plunge, the center is offering several new fitness classes. Yoga, turbo kick and Aikido are just a few of the new classes available.
A complete schedule for all of Westminster’s camps is available on the athletics’ department’s website at www.westminstergriffins.com.
