Degree is offered in paleontologyMay 14, 2005 Westminster College has become the first school in the Intermountain West to offer a minor in paleontology. The new program will be directed by Westminster professor David Goldsmith, who earned his doctorate in geology from Harvard University and was one of the last graduate students to study under renowned scientist, Stephen Jay Gould. Utah is an ideal place for students interested in the new program, according to a press release quoting Goldsmith. "Throughout its long geologic history, Utah has been a tropical beach, a coal swamp, an inland desert and even a freshwater lake," he said. "Nearly every possible environment for life and period of life's history is just waiting to be explored out there." Introduction to geology will be offered this fall and other required course offerings will follow at the private college. Paleontology is a discipline that focuses on understanding the history of life and draws from studies in geology, biology, astronomy, chemistry and physics. |
