U.S. News Ranks BYU 70th and Utah 120th

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Brigham Young was ranked 70th among national universities, up one from last year, and the University of Utah again was No. 120 in U.S. News & World Report's latest annual list of America's Best Colleges.

In its Aug. 28 edition, the magazine ranks the undergraduate programs of 1,400 universities in various categories, ranging from overall excellence to specialized programs and value. Graduate programs will be ranked in April.

Utah State made the third tier overall list -- schools that rank between 125 and 180. It ranked seventh for least amount of debt incurred for an undergraduate degree, with an average debt of $12,440.

Utah Valley State College was said to have the least debt among comprehensive colleges in the West. The magazine said only 54 percent of UVSC graduates have debt and the average debt was $9,046.

The magazine said BYU had the 37th best business program, and the University of Utah had the 60th best engineering program.

Westminster College was No. 20 among Western schools that offer master's degrees but not doctoral programs.
