TRANSCRIPT: Will sugarhouse More like a college campus in the future? It will if Westminster College has its way. The college has run out of room to expand so it hopes to house and teach students in buildings now sitting vacant in parts of Sugarhouse. Fox 13 Sandy Riesgraf joins us live, Sandy— Hi guys, you know with record enrollment at Westminster College this semester their looking for a place to expand to accommodate all the new students, and the college thinks here in Sugarhouse is the best place to do it. Their starting with an old office building right across from Sugarhouse Park, they’ll tear that down and put in student housing and some classrooms.
I think it can be exciting but it’ll take away the enclosed campus that Westminster is usually known for. If we start expanding it, it kind of gets that University type of feel and a lot of students like the small campus.
While some students have concerns about expanding their quaint campus into sugarhouse, the college believes it’s natural.
We’d love nothing more that for Westminster and Sugarhouse to continue to grow together and look more and more like a seamless college town.
A town where students will spend more time and more money and contribute to new growth, rather than stay in the confines of the campus, where’s there’s simply no more room to even house students.
We’ve really outgrown the footprint of the acreage that we have here, and the best way for us to grow that we think is to grow with Sugarhouse as well, and to look at new opportunities that might exist where we don’t have to anymore knock down buildings and build something new, we can be more thoughtful about things that already exist.
So while they look for new opportunities in Sugarhouse to expand their campus, Westminster hopes to have a new building here by 2011, where students will not only live, but take classes, right across from Sugarhouse Park. But again some students have mixed feelings about the plan.
I do like the intimate feeling of the campus, and I like the college town feel of Sugarhouse, but I think living in Sugarhouse might take away from that.
Now they’re hoping that the old office building across from Sugarhouse is the only one they have to tear down and rebuild for their expansion. For the rest, they just hope to occupy in vacant building in the heart of Sugarhouse. They say that nothing else needs to be torn down right here, and they’re hoping that students, college students, can breath new life into this area..
