SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Private Salt Lake City school Westminster College says it hopes to lure transfer students by dropping tuition for some of them to the same amount as attending the most expensive in-state public school, the University of Utah.
The Transfer Scholar Incentive Award would offer qualified students up to $17,000 in aid - in addition to merit-based scholarships and grant money.
Louis Levy, director of undergraduate admissions, says the school is reacting to the difficult economic situation many people are facing.
The average cost to attend Westminster is $35,500 annually. The $17,000 aid package would fill the gap between that cost and the University of Utah's tuition and fees.
Only students with a cumulative transfer GPA of at least 3.5 are being considered.
